Plain-English boundary

“Business license” is a search phrase, not one document

A founder often uses one phrase for a stack of different registrations, permits, approvals and credentials. The safe first move is to identify the authority and decision behind each one.

Entity filing

Creates or registers certain legal entities. It does not approve a premises or regulated activity.

Tax registration

Creates a tax account or permission such as a seller's permit. It does not settle zoning.

Local registration

Registers business activity with a city or county. Other permits can still be required.

Property approval

Addresses use, occupancy, construction, fire or signs at a specific site.

Professional credential

Regulates a person, profession or specialized business activity through a responsible board.

Verification record

Shows what one authority reports. It is not proof of every permission a business may need.
